Monica L. Butler-Laws of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, transitioned on Friday, April 4, 2025, at her residence. Born on May 31, 1960, to Vernon A. Butler and Cleo L. Butler; Monica was the third of five children. Monica attended Charles County Public Schools.
Monica was united in Holy Matrimony to Gregory E. Laws on March 22, 1986. To this union two sons
were born: Gregory E. Laws Jr., and Dominick E. Laws.
Monica was preceded in death by her father Vernon A. Butler.
Monica leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Gregory E. Laws; two sons, Gregory Jr. and Dominick Laws; mother, Cleo L. Butler; mother-in-love, Diane Laws; brothers, Vernon (Rolletta), Darryl (Wanda); two sisters, Cleo V. Warren and Enid Butler; five grandchildren, Domonique, Christopher, Jaiden, Jordan, and Jaelle Laws; two brothers-in-law, James Laws Jr. and Rasheed Laws.

He was also a beloved grandfather to eleven grandchildren, each bringing him immense pride and joy. He also leaves five siblings: Sisters Belinda (Mel) Pickett, Beverly (Michael) Harris, Benita (Robert) Letterlough, and Sharneen (Devarn) Hatton; Brother Eric Smith, and a host of nieces and nephews who will forever treasure his memory. He was preceded in death by his Mother Lourina C. Smith, Father James W. Smith Sr., and Brother Dienal Proctor.

It is with love and gratitude that the family of Francis Grant Wade announces his passing on
Friday, May 16, 2025. Born on July 24, 1940, and raised on a tobacco farm in Hughesville, Maryland.
Francis exemplified faith, hard work, and service to others.
Francis is survived by his children Mark Francis Wade (Pauline), Brenda Carleen Wade (William), and
Michael Grant Wade. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-eight years, Betty Louise Williams Wade. His legacy lives on in those who love him.

Dyson Louis Carroll
On Monday, April 7, 2025, Dyson Louis Carroll entered eternal rest at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Patuxent River in Laurel, Maryland. Dyson was born on February 6, 1941, at Freedmen’s Hospital, Washington, D.C. He was the only child of Oscar and Caroline (Fleet) Carroll, of Nottingham, Prince George’s County, Maryland. He is survived by three children, Angela Curtis, Bryan Diggs, and
Cheryl Diggs; he was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Diggs. Dyson worked as a long-haul truck driver for over fifty years. In addition, he was a professional saxophonist and performed with several bands. He recounted with great respect his experiences of learning to play the instrument under the guidance of Mr. Battle and performing with the bands at Wilmer’s Park and other venues. Dyson will be deeply missed by all that loved him.

Janice Michele Shaw Hawkins
Janice Michele Shaw Hawkins was born in Washington D.C. on August 9, 1960, to the late Janice M. Watson and John Henry Shaw. She departed this earth on Friday, April 11,2025, after a short illness.
From the age of two through thirteen years old, she was raised by her great-grandparents, Benjamin and Odessa Pinkney in Raleigh, North Carolina.
She always believed that they were the reason she became the person we all knew. They taught her that who you are is not determined by the clothes you wear, the car you drive, or the house you live in. It’s how you treat others that people will remember. It was with that mindset that she unwaveringly offered love and support to her family, friends, and her church.
Janice’s Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Christ United Methodist Church, 22919 Christ Church Road, Aquasco, Maryland 20608.

John Christopher Wall
John Christopher Wall, a lifelong resident of Waldorf, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the age of 57. He was born on February 22, 1968, at Physician’s Memorial Hospital in La Plata, Maryland. John was preceded in death by his father, Howard “Ed” Wall Jr., and his brother, Howard “Sonny” Wall III. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kimberly Wall of Waldorf; stepchildren, Brittany, Branden (Emily), and Samantha Johnson; daughter, Christina Martinez (Jose) of South Carolina; granddaughters, Gianna, Bella, and Sofia; and cherished grandson, Noah Wills and expected grandson Boyd Johnson. He also leaves behind his mother, Emily K. Wall; sisters, Peggy Wall, Christine Hague (Warren), and Maria Wall; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. John built a successful career as an electrician, beginning with his father’s company, Ed Wall Electric, before joining IBEW Local 26. He later worked for the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, D.C., before transitioning to Siemens Building Technologies in Beltsville, Maryland, as a Building Automation System Specialist, where he dedicated over 20 years. An extrovert at heart, John lived life to the fullest. He loved riding motorcycles, spending time on the water - boating and crabbing, hosting cookouts, cheering for the Washington Commanders and Capitals, and making memories with family and friends. Whether soaking up the sun or sharing a cold beer with loved ones, he had a special way of bringing people together. John will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him. His laughter and warmth will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

On November 16, 1957, David Lee Richardson was born to Alfred Harrison Carter Richardson Sr., and Mary Lillian Tippett. He had four brothers: Robert Richardson, Joseph Ronald Richardson (Deceased), Johnny M. Richardson Sr., and Alfred Harrison C. Richardson Jr. (Deceased). Two sisters: June Gonzalez and Barbara A. Sutton (Deceased). Richard had three children: Tracy L. Phares Gray, David L. Richardson Jr., and Angela M. Allen (Deceased). Five grandchildren: Kayla A. Gray, John F. Gray Jr., Daniel D. Gray, Madison A. Richardson, and Xavier L. Richardson. He also had eleven nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends whom he loved and loved him. David loved to help family and friends in any way he could. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting. He never had an enemy because everyone he met was a friend. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Duncan Irwin Glascoe, who was born on July 13, 1958, and passed away peacefully at home in Clinton, Maryland on Thursday, March 28, 2025. Duncan was born in Cheverly, Maryland, and raised in Aquasco, Maryland. He attended Gwynn Park High School in Brandywine, Maryland.
Duncan had a witty sense of humor and never passed up an opportunity to talk trash—especially when it came to football. A devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, he cheered for his team with passion every season. He also had a deep appreciation for Philly cheesesteaks and Turkey Hill Diet Green Tea.
Duncan found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including his love for the open road as a truck driver. Throughout his career, he was employed by Chopp & Co. in Waldorf, Maryland, and Sonny’s Trucking LLC in Aquasco, Maryland. He was also a gifted craftsman, known for his skillful hands and creative talents that left a lasting mark on everything he touched. Above all, Duncan cherished his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Thelma Glascoe, and his brother, James Craig. He was the beloved father of Maurice Glascoe and Keaunia Glascoe and a proud grandfather to London, Cameron, Avery, and Maurice Jr. He is also survived by his brother, Evanston “Chuckie” Glascoe and sisters Deborah Glascoe Huff, Beverly Smith, Phyllis Taylor, Laurie Moore, Karen Stewart, Lynn Glascoe, and Gloria Adams-Butler.

Theresa G. Swann
THERESA PERSHAY GREGG SWANN of Charlotte Hall, Maryland transitioned to her heavenly home on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Maryland.
Born on October 11, 1964, to Cleveland Gregg Jr. and Joann Gregg; Theresa was first daughter of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Allen Gregg.
Raised in the city of Alexandria, Virginia, Theresa attended Alexandria City Public Schools (K-12) and graduated from T.C. Williams High School in 1982, now Alexandria High School in Alexandria, Virginia. She furthered her academic studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) earning a B.S. in Business Management in 1986. Theresa was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta, Mu Alpha Chapter at Virginia Tech. Theresa received her religious upbringing at Alleyne AME Zion Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
Theresa was united in Holy Matrimony to Dwight V. (Ike) Swann on June 28, 2003. Together they enjoyed twenty-one years of love and happiness. To this union was born their beautiful daughter, Sydney Alexis. Relocating from Alexandria, the family made their home nearby in Charlotte Hall, Maryland where they attended Hughesville Baptist Church.
For several years Theresa was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield in the District of Columbia and Georgia. But her passion was working with young people. She was an educator for 23 years in Alexandria City Public Schools assigned to George Washington Middle School. Theresa will be remembered for her patience, kindness, dedication and commitment to the success of all students. Not only noted for her work with students and parents; her co-workers speak highly of her willingness of working cooperatively for the benefit of children. Theresa loved her family. She took great care of her mother during her illness.
She loved family gatherings—holiday dinners, picnics, and crab feasts. Birthday celebrations for family
and close friends were special. She loved vacationing at Myrtle Beach with her husband and daughter and having fun on weekend “Girls” trips. Theresa leaves to cherish her legacy a devoted husband, Dwight V. (Ike) Swann; a loving daughter, Sydney Alexis; brother, Cleveland Gregg (LaVonne); sister Sharon Harper; brother-in-love, Wardell (Tammala); sister-in-love, Sheena (Harold); and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and special friends.

Steven Roderick Wade

was born in Washington, D.C. on October 17, 1964, to the late Clarence Albert and Sarah Dorothy Lee Turner Wade. Steven departed this life on Friday, March 7, 2025.
Steven graduated from Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, Maryland, in 1983 and worked in the food service industry. He was an avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing and often spent time at the county lakes and fishing holes with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children: daughter Kayla (Jessie), sons Derick (Illexus) and Trevor; granddaughter Riley; sisters Millicent Mason, Janet Johnson, Kathy Washington, Katrina Washington, and Diana Johnson; brothers Stanley, Benton, Timothy, and Gary Wade; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, uncles, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Paulette.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and co-workers at IHOP.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1200 Charles Street, LaPlata, Maryland 20646 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Frances Brooks
Frances Spencer Brooks was born on September 6, 1934, to Emory L. Spencer and Helen Henson Spencer.
Frances is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, John O. Brooks; one sister Dorice Butler; one sister in-law Eunice Smith; three daughters, Janet Hill, Ellen Crowell and Joan Hummons; a bonus son, Stephen Hurd; five grandchildren; Bajon Brooks-Hummons, Shantay Brooks-Hummons, David Crowell Jr., Spencer Crowell and Nora Hill; two great-grandsons Ayden Mayo and Hendrix Brooks; and host nieces, nephews, cousins’ family and friends.
Frances grew up in Croom, Maryland where she helped her beloved Pa-Pa (grandfather) and Mum-mie (grandmother) with chores around their farm. Frances had a passion for learning having earned her High School Diploma, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Frances dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching and mentoring others while employed with Prince George’s Board of Education. Frances also taught Sunday School for over 50 years, she has literally taught thousands of students.
Frances was a perfectionist in everything she did, she was an excellent cook, baker, a master seamstress, beautician, and gardener. Always a hard worker Frances had many jobs to pay her way through college and took pride in sending money home to help her grandparents.
Frances was a generous, loving wife and matriarch. She gave everything she had to her family. She cared for her mother in her marital home for over 20 years, while raising her family. A hot meal was served every night, with fried fish, oysters, and potato salad every Friday night; while also playing chauffeur to her girls’ music, dance, gymnastics, and swim lessons. Frances took joy in canning fruits and vegetables and making homemade wine during the summer to share with friends and family during the holidays. Frances coined the phrase super woman, she did it all and made it look easy. She lived to be 90 years old and was full of life until her transition on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Frances is deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Thomas Goldring
Departed his earthly life peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Thomas was born on February 12, 1956, in Charles County, Maryland to the late Thomas and Mary Goldring. Thomas received his education in the Charles and St. Mary's Counties Public School Systems.
He dedicated many years of his life working for Matthews & Pierce Masonry until his health no longer permitted him to continue. Thomas lived a life defined by hard work, resilience, and dedication to his craft. His dedication to his work earned him the respect of his colleagues and community until his health challenges required him to step away.
Thomas was a man who carried the spirit of his family within him, and their memories lived on as a testament to the bonds he shared with them. He will forever hold a special place in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Thomas and Mary Goldring; his devoted wife Patricia; his beloved daughter Keisha; his brothers, Leroy, Francis, and Charles, and his sister Harriet.
Thomas is survived by his two sons, Thomas and Travis Goldring; five brothers, James Woodland (Wanda), Joseph Goldring, John Goldring (Viky), Michael Goldring (Monica), and Joseph Woodland; five sisters, Mary Savoy, Joyce Goldring, Barbara Cooke (Harry), Frances Mackall, and Florence Harrod (Ernest); six cherished grandchildren: Isaiah, Annmarie, Ta’Niya, Rashad, Jamiyah, Andriana, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Thomas will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his love for his family, and the strength he showed throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Sonovia Erna Gallup
Sunrise July 4, 1923 - Sunset March 18, 2025
Sonovia Erna Gallup was born on July 4, 1923, in Kingstree, South Carolina, the third of nine children born to the late Sadie McFadden and Robert Cooper. She passed away peacefully at the age of 101. Sonovia, also known as "Nona" to her friends, grew up in Northeast D.C. living on 13th Street, G Street, and Maryland Avenue. She attended Elijah P. Lovejoy Elementary School, Hugh M. Brown Junior High School, and Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School where she was a member of the Dramatics Club and the National Honor Society. Sonovia attended Miner Teachers College (a.k.a. University of the District of Columbia) until World War II began at which time she worked for two years at the War Department. She then returned to Miner to complete her degree in 1944. After graduating from Miner, she worked at Blanche K. Bruce Elementary School in Northwest D.C. as a first and second grade teacher. Sonovia took pride in her ability to teach children how to read. She once said that if given enough time, she could teach a rock to read.
While working in D.C., Sonovia met and fell in love with a young minister named Cecil D. Gallup. They married in 1949, and moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, for eight years before settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There she would continue to teach and Cecil accepted the pastorate of Holy Trinity Baptist Church. Their loving union extended over 51 years until Cecil's passing in October 2000.
As a child, Sonovia took piano lessons at Lovejoy Community Center every Monday and Wednesday. She started her lessons in the second grade and continued to play into her adult years. Sonovia had an amazing knack for quickly learning new music. One of her favorite songs to play was "Waltz of the Flowers" by Tchaikovsky.
Sonovia consistently won the prize for most stylish aunt at family gatherings. She also kept an immaculate house where nothing was out of place for very long. She loved to travel with her husband, sisters, and friends to locations such as Africa and Israel. She had the occasion to meet Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. She had a hearty appetite and loved to finish a good meal off with a cold beer. She loved reading the newspaper and doing word puzzles. She had a gracious spirit and while in Philadelphia was a member of Club Karma, an all-women, all-seniors kindness club who provided services to the homeless population and the Salvation Army. Sonovia was known for constantly thanking her loved ones for their kindness and generosity.
Sonovia is preceded in death by her husband, siblings Gwendolyn Colston, William Cooper, Dolores Craig, Lillie Speed, Robert Cooper, Waltine Wills, and Constance Hoffman. She is survived by her sister Grace Lamothe, and sister-in-law Juanita Cooper, her nieces, nephews, and friends.

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Mary Darlene Chapman on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, of Hughesville, Maryland. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, known for her generosity, strength, and sense of spontaneity.
Born on October 8, 1959, in Washington, D.C., Darlene lived a full life. She was a hard worker who found joy in the simple things in life. Darlene was the youngest daughter of the late Thelma Kathleen Chapman (Butler) and Joseph “Francis” Chapman Sr. She was a life-long resident of Charles County. She received her education in the Charles County Public School System, attending T.C. Martin Elementary, John Hanson Middle, and Thomas Stone High School, where she graduated in June of 1977. She is survived by her siblings Thelma “Beeme”, Joseph Jr. “Joe Joe”, Doris, Donna, and Edward “Manny”; her children, Michael (Lindsay) and Sheree (James); her grandsons, Bryson, Maddox, Brayden, Channing, and Blayne; and a host of nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory. Shortly after graduating, Alfred worked in construction followed by a lifelong career with Giant Food until his retirement. He found joy in listening to music, gardening, and all yardwork. He prided himself with always having a clean car, while always sporting the sharpest outfit, always dressing clean from head to toe; he absolutely loved his hats and jewelry. Alfred loved being around family and friends, he was always the life of the party. Alfred's legacy of smiles & laughter continues to inspire all that knew him. Fannie Mae Hawkins Twilley of Clinton, Maryland transitioned to her Eternal Rest on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Fannie was born February 13, 1933, to the late Joseph and Janie Hawkins in Athens, Georgia. In search of a better life, she relocated to Washington, D.C. in the early 1950’s. She was the loving wife of George H. Twilley, Sr., for 62 years until his passing. The couple lived in Glenarden, Maryland where they raised their three children. A career nurse for 35 years, she retired from DC General Hospital in 1992. Following her retirement, she became a licensed childcare provider and operated “Grandma’s Christian Day Care” for 20 years. A beloved evangelist at her church (Faith, Hope & Charity Ministries), she traveled throughout the Washington metropolitan area and the east coast ministering the word of God and sharing the love of Christ. A virtuous woman of faith, she gave herself wholeheartedly to a lifestyle of prayer and consecration. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Minister Joyce Jenkins; two sons, Suffragan Bishop George Twilley, Sr. (Lady Lynette) and Bishop Gregory Twilley, Sr.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Thompson; brother, Frank Hawkins (Flora); a host of surrogate daughters and grandchildren, spiritual sons and daughters, godchildren, nieces, nephews, and relatives. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Grace Apostolic Church, 4417 Dix St. N.E., Washington, D.C. 20019, from 10:00 a.m. until Homegoing Celebration at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 1:45 p.m. at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623.

Trevonte Jude Young​​​
Trevonte Jude Young, a loving son, was one of two twins born to Jude Edward Young and Angela Young on February 20, 1997, at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He transitioned to his Eternal Rest on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the age of twenty-seven. Although he loved Florida, he was a resident of Hughesville, Maryland, and a graduate of Gwynn Park High School. Trevonte proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, beginning his service on September 21, 2015, and completing his tour of duty September 20, 2019. Following his military career as a Transmissions System Operator, he transitioned into the field of information technology, working for three major contracting companies in the National Capital Region. Known for his respect, kindness, generosity, and remarkable ability to bring laughter to those around him. Trevonte left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He found joy in music, singing, savoring tasty food, and immersing himself in anime passion that brought him countless hours of enjoyment. He was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. Trevonte is survived by his Mother Angela Henderson; Stepfather Roy Gene Henderson; Father Jude Edward Young; twin brother Devonte Young; brothers Maurice Wilson (Tiana), Roy N. Henderson, and Roy Henderson II; sisters Shaleah McLaughlin and Kimberly King; four nephews; two nieces; and a host of loving relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory. May Trevonte’s legacy of warmth and laughter continue to inspire all who knew him. Celebrating the Life of Mae Ruth Proctor
On January 26, 2025, our beloved Mae Ruth Proctor transitioned from this life to be with her Heavenly Father. A devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend. Ruth’s life was a testament to love, faith, and family. Born on May 28, 1933, to the late Robert Lee and Mary Viola Proctor (Robinson), Ruth was raised on a farm in Pomfret, Maryland, and educated in Charles County Public Schools. On September 30, 1950, she married the love of her life, William “Gus” Roger Proctor, and together they built a legacy of love, raising thirteen children. Though her roots were in Pomfret, Ruth spent most of her life in Prince George’s County, first in Upper Marlboro and later in Clinton. A dedicated homemaker, she thrived in the heart of a large, close-knit family. Her culinary talents were unmatched; her cooking was often imitated but never duplicated. Known affectionately as "Roadrunner," Ruth had a zest for life, enjoying shopping, visiting casinos, traveling the world (Germany, Japan, Portugal, Italy, and beyond), and most of all, spending time with her family. Ruth was an active and dedicated member of several organizations. She was a proud member of the St. John’s Ladies Auxiliary #310, Knights of St. John's International for fifty years, where she held numerous positions and remained engaged until September 2024 at the age of 91. Additionally, she was a member of the St. John’s Senior Lunch Bunch, the MAC Club, and the Camp Springs Senior Activity Center. She leaves behind a loving and devoted family: her thirteen children—Vernell, Arlene (Marty), Connie, Gerald (Barbarann), Sharon (Clarence), Tony (Dee), Elice, Mark (Donna), Peter, Donnalee, Pam (Chris), Michelle, and Rochelle; twenty-seven grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; three brothers—Comillias, Carroll, and Donald; and one sister, Sheila. She is also survived by five sisters-in-law—Donna, Adelaide, Romaine (Tee), Mary, and Shirley—as well as a host of family, friends, and special companions, Lucille, Agnes, and Delores. Ruth is now reunited in eternal rest with her beloved husband, William "Gus"; her parents, Robert Lee and Viola; her brother, Ambrose; her sisters, Dorothy, Diane, and Thelma; and numerous dear relatives and friends Ruth was a woman of deep faith, kindness, and generosity. She lived a life rooted in love and service, always willing to extend a helping hand. Her unwavering devotion to God and her strong Catholic faith guided her through life and inspired all who knew her. She will be remembered as a warmhearted, compassionate, and spirited soul who treasured her family above all. Though she is no longer with us in body, her love, wisdom, and legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
