Mary Edna Proctor


Mary Edna Proctor passed peacefully from this life on the morning of November 14, 2017, at Home Care Nursing Home in Clinton, Maryland, after a gradual decline in health. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life. Mary Edna was born at home by a midwife in Oxon Hill, MD. She was the 5th child born to the late Sara Annie and John Clinton Proctor. She married Charles Henry Proctor on November 16, 1957 and from that marriage they had 8 children. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Henry Proctor, Sr. ; two brothers Raymond (Poncho) and John Eugene (“E”) and two sisters Pearl Proctor and Helen Harley, 3 sons Charles Jeffrey, Paul Eric and Charles Proctor, Jr., 1 grandson Kevin Daniel Walls and 1 son-in-law Lawrence Joseph Proctor (Budgie). Mary Edna was educated in the Prince George’s County Public School System and graduated from Fairmount Heights High School. She was a homemaker. Mary Edna loved her family and had fun laughing with family members and friends at get-togethers and going to the Casinos. She loved playing cards, playing her daily numbers and going to Bingo. She leaves to mourn her loss, 3 daughters Pamela Proctor, Angela Walls (Keith), Susan Bright (Dean), 2 sons Benjamin (Patricia) and Joseph Proctor and a daughter-in-law Patricia Proctor, 7 grandchildren Felicia and Lawrence Proctor, David and Darius Walls, Shannon Arrington, Joseph Proctor, Jr. and Shannel Proctor, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, 1 sister Veronica (Lucille), 1 brother john Lewis (Chubby), 2 sister-in-laws Betty and Jacqueline Proctor, 2 Godchildren Avery Proctor and Sharon Savoy and a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends. Carl E. Windsor, Sr. “Rusty” Age 69


of Waldorf, Maryland transitioned to eternal rest on Thursday, November 2, 2017.

He leaves to cherish his memory, loving wife, Terry D. Windsor; Children, Carl E. Windsor Jr (Lalaa), Louis S. Windsor (Shontae), Yvonne V. McCants “Vonnie”, Tabett Prescott (Jerome) and a host of grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Veronica Elizabeth Johnson Coates


of White Plains, MD, departed this life on November 8, 2017 at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 17, 1937 to the late Iver McClenon Johnson and Beatrice Elizabeth Brawner Johnson. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She attended Middletown Elementary School, and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1955 at Pomonkey High School, where she met high school sweetheart James Bernard Coates. They married on June 1, 1957. From their 59 year union came son Kevin Bernard Coates, and daughter Gail Yvonne Coates. Veronica attended American University and Morgan State University, obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, and a Masters Degree in Social Work Administration from Howard University. She was employed by the Charles County Department of Social Services, Biomedical Applications/Fresnius Medical Care, and with husband James, operated a successful business as a Shaklee Independent Distributor for over 40 years. Veronica was Co-Founder of the Afro-American Heritage Society of Charles County, Inc., Co-Founder/Producer of “Gospel Roots” historical musical, Member and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Charles County Community College, and Member and Chair of the Board of Directors of Civista Medical Care. Her special personal achievements were finding her Uncle Kelly’s World War II burial site near Florence, Italy, working on Capitol Hill with Mrs. Rosa Parks, and publishing her autobiography.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband James; brothers-in-law Luke Shaw, Jr. and Rember Burthey; and sister-in-law Mary Coates. Veronica is survived by son Kevin (Thomasina); daughter Gail; grandchildren: Shawn Coates, Alisha Coates, Ashley Kimbrough (Ashton), and Brittany Coates; brother Joseph Johnson (Dazzell); sisters Peggy Burthey and Cynthia Shaw; great-grandchildren: Lyric, Aidan, Kapree and Chloe; aunt Ida Makle; uncles Henry Brawner (Mary) and Joseph Brawner, Sr. (Delores); nieces Katika Gayles (Rodney) and Jonata Hertz; nephew Grant Richardson III; brother-in-law Russell Coates (Annette); devoted cousin Lawrence Brawner; devoted friend and advocate Lonna Swann; devoted caregiver Ellen Hawkins; her Socialites comrades of 50 years; a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives and friends, and her Shaklee family. In lieu of flowers, please purchase her autobiography with proceeds to the Veronica Coates Scholarship Fund for students majoring in African-American history, per her request. Fund donations are also accepted.


Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel, 20605 Aquasco Road, Aquasco, Maryland from 5 to 7pm, with prayer service at 7pm. Visitation will continue on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4590 St. Joseph Way, Pomfret, MD, from 10am to 10:45am, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Interment follows at the church cemetery.

JOHN “SHIRLEY” NEWMAN, went home to his resting place on Saturday, October 28, 2017. Shirley leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 60 years Girl Shirley, two devoted children, Kevin M. Newman, Sr. and Demetria C. Brown (GREG). Five beautiful grandchildren, Amanda E. King (Ralph), Karen M. Newman, Johnathan G. Brown (Rubi), Kevin M. Newman, Jr. (deceased) and Patrick S. Brown. One sister, Vivian Harley, two brothers Ralph (Sylvia) and Roderick (Demetria) Newman. One Aunt Almeda Carroll whom he adored. Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Shirley will be laid to rest on Friday, November 10th, 2017 from 9:00am until time of Mass at 10:00am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Baden, Maryland. Interment Resurrection Cemetery Clinton, Maryland.

Edward“Eddie” Sebastian Curtis departed his earthly home for heavenly reward on Thursday, October 26, 2017. Eddie was born May 2, 1949 to the late James A Curtis and Charity S. DeVille of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He attended St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School and graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in 1967. Eddie served in the Armed Forces from 1969 through 1970,reaching the rank of sergeant.Eddie was united in holy Matrimony to Dorothy J. Brown on August 18, 1973 and from this union a devoted son Edward S. Curtis II Eddie II was the apple of his dad’s eye. Eddie also was the Godfather to Lathan G. Swepson. Eddie was a faithful member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Church family for 60 plus years. He also served as usher for many of those years. Eddie and his brothers put a new roof on the church Parish Community Room (PCR Room).As a young man, Eddie was a hunter, bowler, fisherman, and farmer. He and his brothers and brother-in-law were builders, roofers, window installers, and much more. Eddie was Mr. Everything to his family: car mechanic, income tax preparer, computer genius, cell phone technician, and grill master. There was no problems to complex for Eddie to solve. He and his family and friends would spend hours upon hours in his club house (man cave) which they built from the ground up. Eddie equipped his club house with all the conveniences of home; microwave,refrigerator, heating, air conditioning. They would eat drink and swap man stories late into the night.Eddie retired from the census Bureau in 2001 after 37 years of service. He spent 15 years at the Verizon Center which began as a part-time job, but soon blossomed into full-time position which he loved.Eddie leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 44 years, Dorothy J., a son Ed II, brothers:James, Purnell, Francis Curtis, sister: Gloria Davis, sister-in-laws: Irene, Annabelle, Helen,Denise, Pat,and a mother-in-law.He also leaves to cherish his memories two special nephews Donald Curtis and Lathan Swepson, and one special niece Lorraine Curtis and a host of other nieces, nephews relatives and friends. ANDREW BERNARD BURNS, Age 21

Andrew Bernard Burns, 21, of Upper Marlboro, MD transitioned to eternal rest on Sunday October 22, 2017, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was born December 22, 1995, the son of Reverend and Mrs. Carlton R. (Lavice) Burns, Sr. A 2013 Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School graduate, Andrew was a member of the Varsity Swim and Baseball Teams. In May of this year, Andrew graduated from Frostburg State University with a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Andrew surrendered his life to Jesus Christ at an early age. He was a young man of strong faith. He believed in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love. He had a real and abiding passion for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever and with whomever he came in contact with. He loved his family, relatives and friends and, he used his beautiful smile and encouraging words to be a blessing to others. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Upper Marlboro, MD where he served in the Youth, Audio and Evangelism Ministries. The Celebration of Life Services honoring Andrew will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at New Home Baptist Church, located at 8320 Landover Road, Landover, MD 20785. The Family Greeting will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. The Celebration of Life Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery Clinton, Maryland.

Richard Howard Thompson

passed away in the comfort of his home on October 6, 2017. Howard was born on May 21, 1938 in Bel Alton, MD and was a devoted husband for 57 years to the love of his life, Elizabeth Marie Thompson. He was a loving father to his three daughters Trina, Sonya, and Joanna and his late son, Troy. He adored his four grandchildren, Brandi, Marvin (Jr), Kristie, and Tino and his five great grandchildren, Maliq, Amira, Mikell, Kaylin, and Maya. He would have welcomed his sixth great grandchild in early December. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 10am – 11am at St. Joseph Center, 11704 Duley Station Rd.
